Barbara Shinn and David Page, who had previously spent long careers in the farm to table restaurant movement, founded Shinn Estate Vineyards in 1998. The vineyard, winery, tasting room and inn are located on a pastoral farm in Mattituck, off of the main wine trail in the North Fork.
Shinn Estate Vineyards is surrounded by hundreds of acres of preserved farmland - providing endless views, peace and quiet. A rustic tasting room adjacent to the farm winery is open year round, featuring a large patio, bar and outdoor seating that overlooks the vineyard.
Shinn Estate Vineyards holistically farms 25 acres of vineyards to allow the farm ecosystem to thrive in the landscape as well as in the cellar. David and Barbara use only natural winemaking techniques with minimal intervention.
A historic Farmhouse Inn offers elegant and modern accommodations with 4 guest rooms revealing inviting vineyard and farm views. Solar panels and a wind turbine produce all the energy used for the winery, cellar, vineyard and Farmhouse Inn, adding to a sustainable approach to living.
The vineyard floor is a blooming meadow growing between vine rows and under the trellis. Soil nutrition combines a diet of organic inputs including seaweed, fish, composted wine pressings, mulched pruning, peanut shells, and biological teas. This complex natural habitat has evolved into a teeming ecosystem filled with beneficial insects, rabbits, birds, honeybees and wild pollinators. A balanced ecosystem fostered by sustainable, organic and Biodynamic based winegrowing creates harmony among the vines, grace and clarity to the wines.
The wine crafted at Shinn Estate Vineyards is intended to be a living memory of a time and place in vineyard life. It believes each vintage provides the gift of unique and vibrant fruit that speaks honestly and forthrightly of this time and place. Wine is a living and evolving time machine, built by the life force of nature and gentle touch of human beings.
David Page is also an avid distiller producing fine brandies and grappa from a copper Alembic still. The Julius Drover brandies, named after David’s whisky farming grandfather, are aged 4 or more years in small oak casks.
As a part of caring for the vineyard, the surrounding ecosystem, watershed and good health of fellow workers, Shinn Estate Vineyards is a founding member of Long Island Sustainable Winegrowing, a third-party certification program addressing low impact winegrowing practices. Partnering with HRH Care Shinn Estate Vineyards has developed a program of On Farm Health Days bringing doctors to vineyards providing much needed health assessments to field workers.
